On this International Day of the Girl, we celebrate the incredible transformation of one young woman, Benter, who has defied the odds and achieved her dreams through the power of education. Benter, a proud alumna of KEF, represents the hundreds of girls’ whose dreams have come true and their lives changed by the opportunities and support Kenya Education Fund provides. KEF is committed to empowering the next generation of young women to become the leaders and change-makers of tomorrow.
Meet Benter, a 27-year-old Executive Assistant and HR professional at a thriving media and creative hub. But her journey was not always this bright. Benter grew up on the east side of Nairobi, an area known for its slums, and challenging and unforgiving circumstances. She, her mother, and her baby brother faced hardships that would have left many feeling hopeless.
Benter's mother, a hardworking and determined woman, took on any job she could find to make ends meet – from washing clothes to cleaning homes and factories to selling vegetables. Despite their struggles, Benter always believed that education was her way out of the ghetto. She excelled in school, earning her a spot in good institutions for secondary.
However, Benter's education was often interrupted because of financial difficulties. In her first year of high school, she was repeatedly sent home due to unpaid fees, leaving her with a significant deficit. Her dream of breaking free from the cycle of poverty seemed almost impossible for the 14-year-old.
But then, KEF entered her life as a ray of hope. Benter's mother persisted, continuously checking the status of her application. In her second year of school, Benter became a KEF scholar. Her tuition fees were paid in full, and she received the books and supplies necessary for her studies. More than that, she attended life skills workshops that equipped her for success in every aspect of her life.
KEF didn't stop with her secondary education; they continued to support her through the bridge scholarship, enabling her to earn a Bachelor's degree in HR Management. Thanks to the comprehensive support systems provided by KEF, Benter never lacked academically, socially, or emotionally. The program instilled in her a mindset of resilience and giving back.
Today, Benter lives and works in Nairobi, supporting herself and her family. She has moved her family to a safer neighborhood, Her mother has started a small fruit and vegetable business and Benter is working towards building a permanent home for her upcountry. She looks forward to starting her own family and is also upskilling in technology to keep up with the ever-evolving world of AI.
As we commemorate the International Day of the Girl, Benter's story is a powerful reminder of the transformational impact education can have. KEF is making dreams come true for hundreds of girls like Benter, but there are many more waiting for their chance.
