Direct Sponsorship Program

KEF supports the education of both girls and boys in Kenya through direct sponsorships from caring families and individuals living all over the world. This method of direct sponsorship is also perfect for current or returned Peace Corps volunteers, ex-pats and exchange students who want to sponsor a specific student with whom they have developed a special relationship during their service. Those who once lived in Kenya often return home wishing there was some way to continue helping the families and children who have helped defined their African experience.  Our sponsorship program involves two vital components that allow anyone in the world to help individual Kenyan students with a 4-year high school scholarship:

1. Paying School Fees. For $500 (payable in online installments of only $45/mo) you can send a child to a reputable high school (BOARDING ONLY) for an entire year (minimum of 4-year commitment or $2000). Inclusive in this cost are the child’s school uniforms, shoes, books, tutoring, field trips, exam fees, pocket money and mosquito nets. The KEF asks sponsors to commit this amount annually until their sponsored student graduates high school and receives the full benefit of a complete education.

2. Cross-Cultural Correspondence. Through letters and pictures sent by mail, the sponsor and the student are encouraged to get to know one another by sharing details about life at home, school or work. This correspondence builds a bridge between two entirely different worlds, providing both the sponsor and student with an education about life in another culture. By committing to the child's education until they graduate, you can expect your relationship with your student to strengthen as you watch them learn and grow because of your generous support.

In 2002, the government of Kenya abolished school fees for primary education up to grade 8. While this has allowed millions of more students to receive elementary education, unfortunately the majority of them cannot afford to continue on to the high school level. The goal of the KEF is therefore to boost the number of students that enter and complete high school, providing them with the skills and opportunity to excel in life. We carefully hand-pick schools that we know offer high quality education, as well as proper nutrition and good living conditions. All KEF students attend schools equipped with electricity, computers and well-trained teachers.

With the help of local notables and trusted friends, The KEF is able to identify the most needy families in rural parts of Kenya such as Loitoktok and Tala. Some of our current students have been orphaned by AIDS; others simply come from destitute families. This program maintains an even distribution of boys and girls. All are equally deserving of this opportunity.
